Michigan has a wonderful maritime history and tradition. Many people do not realize the state has 3,2088 miles of coastline along some part of the Great Lakes. Thus, the entire state has access to the open ocean via Lake Huron, Lake Erie, Lake Ontario then to the Atlantic via the St. Lawrence seaway.
The Detroit Historical Society’s work in preserving this maritime heritage is first rate. The Historical Society maintains a wonderful maritime museum, the Dossin Great Lakes Museum. The western Michigan town of South Haven is home to the Michigan Maritime Museum , a wonderful facility for the whole family.
